Welcome

TXT loosely stands for textile, tactile, text, context. TXT is the textile driven department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

In the lower part of this website you can intuitively browse through our image-bank. There are three types of slide-shows: overall assessments, special projects and individual (graduation) students. If you are looking for a specific project or student, try the index.

In the upper part of this website, you can find all practical information. Vision and Program are also downloadable in .pdf format.

This website is endless. Scroll to the right or use navigation.

Enjoy!

Vision

The TXT department educates students to become specialized material developers, (product) designers and researchers.

Textile as a material, as a system, as ‘possibility’, forms the heart of the curriculum.

These possibilities only seem to get larger. Lightweight compo- sites, for instance, used in architecture and the aerospace industries, are nothing but stiffened weaves and knits.

Textile as a material of the future; quite remarkable if you think that the first man-made fabrics date from 7000 years ago. It’s obvious that textiles are ‘here to stay’.

At TXT, products and materials are being produced. The idea of ‘raw’ or ‘half’ product is important. That raw product allows us to negotiate between different end users: architecture, fashion, interior, and construction.

At TXT we try to create a work flow where ‘thinking’ and ‘producing’ are permanently connected. Within the predominantly applied character of the department there is room for a more autonomous approach. Download pdf

Program

The lessons are loosely grouped in three perspectives:

  1. 1. Material. The construction (or deconstruction) of textile. Weaving, knitting, and silkscreen printing are key-techniques.

  2. 2. Design. The application of textile qualities in ‘products’. We work with the body and (public) space as anchor-references.

  1. 3. Context/Theory. How do you connect thinking to developing/producing and the other way around? How can you be the director of your own work? How do you represent yourself and your work in the outside world? Reading, writing, and presenting are an essential part of the curriculum.

At the end of the 2de ‘vakjaar’ there is time for outside-school experiences.

The TXT department has a weaving workshop, and has guaranteed access to the knit/print workshop.

Apart from the technical possibilities, the professional, specialized staff is an essential part of these workshops. Download pdf
