Visa (MVV)
To study in the Netherlands you need to have a legal status. This means that you cannot enter the Netherlands on a tourist visa, but that you’ll have to apply for a provisional residence permit, the MVV visa. This MVV-visa is only required for students from certain foreign countries.
All non-EU/EEA students are required to apply for their residence permit immediately after getting admitted to the academy. Our International Office will contact you about this by e-mail to provide you with a login code with which you can start the application.
It is only possible to apply for the MVV and/or final residence permit through the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
The application will only be submitted after all the necessary documents have been received and the money has been deposited into the bank account of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
The countries that do not need the MVV visa are:
- All EU/EEA countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
For students from Bulgaria and Romania it may have some benefits in the future to apply for a residence permit.
Application fee for students from Bulgaria and Romania: 40 euro
The non-EU/EEA countries that do need a residence permit without the MVV visa are:
- Canada
- Japan
- New Zealand
- South Korea
- Taiwan
- United States of America
Application fee: 600 euro
The non-EU/EEA countries that do need the MVV visa are:
All students from countries NOT listed above are required to already have the MVV visa before entering the Netherlands to start their studies, and before September 1st, which is the official start date of the academic year. Application fee: 600 euro (but 300 euro for students with Israeli nationality)
During the application procedure for the MVV visa you are not allowed to be in the Netherlands. After your arrival in the Netherlands we will inform you on when and where to collect the final residence permit.
Our International Office will send a confirmation by e-mail once the application has been submitted. Students have to contact the Dutch embassy or consulate themselves in their home country three weeks after this confirmation e-mail.
While picking up the MVV, ask for a combined visa (D+C visa: MVV and tourist visa as well). This will give you the opportunity of multiple entry, which means you are allowed to pass the Dutch border several times. You will need this to take part in excursions abroad during the application procedure for the residence permit. The costs for a tourist visa are € 35.
Please note:
The process for an MVV visa can take up to 1 month, so you have to submit your request as early as possible. The Dutch Immigration Office (IND) will reject requests for a residence permit from anyone who has already entered the Netherlands without an MVV visa. The Gerrit Rietveld Academie cannot register you as a student without a residence permit.
Students arriving in the Netherlands after the official start date of the academic year, which is September 1st, cannot be registered!
