Rietveld UnCut

Rietveld UnCut is in addition to the Open Day and the Graduation Show another major occasion on which the academy presents itself to the outside world in all its many facets. Rietveld UnCut is unlike any other Rietveld event. Rietveld UnCut seeks genuine interaction with the audience.
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie and De Brakke Grond are organising Rietveld Uncut for the fourth time. This year projects evolve around ‘the making of’; the process of making an artwork.

'The Making of'

9/10 November 2012

Opening: 9 November, 19.00hr
At De Brakke Grond, Nes 45, Amsterdam
9 November 19.00hr to 23.00hr
10 November 13.00hr to 23.00hr
Free entrance

During Rietveld Uncut on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 November, students will be demonstrating how an artwork is created in a series of interactive presentations. The entire process from concept to final result will be followed, including the significant choices made by the artist along the way: which materials will be used, which skills will need to be acquired, will part of the work be outsourced?
Students from thirteen different fields of study will be presenting their work and especially the processes behind it. Topics range from fashion to glass and from architectural design to visual art.

Rietveld Cinema

In addition, the installation Rietveld Cinema can be seen in De Brakke Grond from 1 October to 10 November 2012. Rietveld Cinema will be showing a selection of fragments from Rietveld TV, accompanied by short documentaries on the theme of ‘The Making Of’ from the video archives of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

Symposium

In the run-up to Rietveld Uncut, a symposium was held on Monday 1 October. During this evening programme, moderated by Bart Rutten, various artists discussed the creative process behind their work.
Speakers David Bade, Lieven Segers, and Job Koelewijn illuminated their artistry from the perspective of their own practical experience. They discussed the process of making art using key pieces from their work. Ann Meskens introduced the evening. This symposium looked ahead to Rietveld Uncut 2012 and will be a source of inspiration for both visitors and participating students.

Since 2009 Rietveld UnCut is organised by former students Tarja Szaraniec and Tomas Adolfs in cooperation with Flemish Arts’ Centre the ‘Brakke Grond’. In 2009 and 2010 visual artist Maze de Boer was guest-director. Rietveld UnCut will be held each year in November.
