Preparatory year
The Preparatory Year is a preparatory study programme for the university of applied sciences programme in Fine Arts or Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. The emphasis during the Preparatory Year is on creating, thinking and doing simultaneously. If you have successfully completed the entire Preparatory Year (attendance is very important), you will be automatically admitted to the Foundation Year, the first bachelor course year of the bachelor’s degree programs of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
The Preparatory Year starts on Wednesday September 28th , at 04.00 pm with an introduction. The lessons start on Thursday September 29th at 06.30 pm.
Admission requirements: secondary education giving access to higher education
Duration: 3 to 4 sessions a week for 30 weeks: Wednesday: 14:00–17:00 and 18:30–21:30 Thursday: 18:30–21:30 Friday: 14:00–17:00 Costs: € 1728.
The Preparatory Year is a preparatory study programme for the university of applied sciences programme in Fine Arts or Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. The emphasis during the Preparatory Year is on creating, thinking and doing simultaneously. It is a serious preparation for a study programme at the Academy, and is intended to teach you how to react independently to assignments and reflect on your work with your lecturers and fellow students within one year. You will take classes in visual art and design and participate in media projects. The theory component comprises the Studium Generale, a lecture series of the Rietveld Academy, and visits to exhibitions and museums. You will be taught by professional artists and designers.
You will undergo an evaluation twice a year: at the end of January and at the end of May. Following the last evaluation, provided that you have completed and passed the whole Preparatory Year, you will be admitted to the Foundation Year the first year of study of the bachelor’s degree programs of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
The Preparatory Year is not subsidized by the government. This means that you can not apply for student grants or loans for this year.

The preparatory year is preceded by a selection on the basis of the work you bring along and an interview with a lecturer. The work you bring along may consist of sketches, doodles, photographs, videos or three-dimensional work – in short, anything that shows your expressive capacity (at least 10 and no more than 30 pieces). The maximum age for participation in the preparatory year is 25. You can take part in the selection by completing the application form and sending it to:

Applications must be received by May 10 (for May/June admission round), or September 1st, 2011 (for September admission round).
