Admission Dutch Students

The admission procedure of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie consists of two rounds: the consultation hour and the entrance examination.

1st round: The consultation hour

During the consultation hour your visual work will be assessed and you will have a conversation with a lecturer. If the work you have brought along receives a positive assessment, you may proceed to the second round, the entrance examination.

For the consultation hour, you should bring along a wide variety of visual and/or design work, at most three years old. Do not just bring along finished results: initial sketches, ideas and plans can also provide insight and direction for the consultation. Be sure to bring plenty of work along to the consultation, at least 20 pieces. These can be drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, graphics, textiles, garments, ceramics, items of jewellery, floor plans, models and, if applicable, texts. Of heavy or large pieces photographs may be shown instead of bringing along the pieces themselves. Internet presentations will not be considered. CDs and DVDs can be used provided that you bring along your own laptop.

To maximise your chances, come to the first consultations before the Christmas break. During the consultation, you will receive recommendations on how to prepare for the entrance examination (second round of the selection procedure). The earlier you come, the more time you will have to prepare for the examination. There will also be more time for answering questions during the earlier consultations. The regular admission consultations run from November to March. From mid-October, appointments for the 2010/2011 academic year can be made through this website.

2nd round: The entrance examination

All candidates must take the entrance examination. The entrance examinations take place in April and May. A few weeks before the examination, you will receive an invitation by mail. Candidates for the first bachelor course year will also recieve two home assignments. The entrance exam consists of an admission interview with one or two separate admissions committees. During these interviews, you will present a large and varied selection of your visual work, no more than 3 years old. Based on your presentation, the committees will ask you questions, for instance on your work, the homework assignments, your motivation, your background, your sources of inspiration and your expectations of the study programme. The interviews will last a maximum of 20 minutes. Before the examination, you will have a little time to set up your work in the classroom in which the examination takes place. You will receive the results by e-mail three weeks after the examination.
