BACHELOR IN ARUBA
Read more
In consultation with the government of Aruba, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie has decided to open an Academy for Fine Arts and Design on Aruba in October 2012.
The curriculum will be aligned to the Bachelor programme as it is taught in the Netherlands. However, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Aruba will have its own unique Caribbean character and is aiming to take up a prominent position in Aruban society.
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie expects this new institute will enable it to play an important role in the development of fine arts and design in the Caribbean region and the Americas.
The goal of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Aruba is to train talented young people in the arts in such a way that they can work independently in the fields of Fine Arts and Design. It intends its graduates to be able to produce their own work and to be trend-setters in their chosen field.
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam offers two Bachelor programmes (Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Design) and four Master programmes (Master of Fine Arts, Master of Applied Arts, Master of Graphic Design and Master of Interior Architecture). The institute on Aruba will initially offer one Bachelor programme, with the possibility of Master programmes being added at a later date.
Admission to the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Aruba
The admission procedure for students wishing to enter the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in October 2012 will take place in June 2012. Candidates will be expected to show a portfolio containing a range of their work. The Gerrit Rietveld Academie Aruba is offering a preparatory course to help interested candidates build up a portfolio.

Gerrit Rietveld Academie designs its own new building
Under the motto ‘Gerrit&Willem Do-It-Yourself’, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the (Willem) Sandberg Institute have started the process of designing of a new building, conceived by the academy itself. The Executive Board is convinced that the talent to be found in the academy's own community offers the best basis for creating a building that can meet the needs of professional art education in the future.
The decision to launch this progressive new building project was triggered by a lack of space and the desire to bring together all teaching activities in a single location. Students, lecturers and alumni were invited to form teams and submit a design proposal. On Thursday 26 January, an expert judging panel and the whole Rietveld community were unanimous in their selection of the winning design. The winning team FedLev consists of two lecturers (who are also alumni) and two students at the academy. The design of the third building in Amsterdam's Fred. Roeskestraat will be developed in the coming months. The new building is scheduled to open in September 2014.
Thanks to the project, Gerrit and Willem will literally be writing their own history.
Gerrit&Willem Do-It-Yourself
Gerrit & Willem Do It Yourself is an innovative project that involves the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Institute turning to their own community in search of a design vision for a new building for teaching purposes. In doing so, the academy is remaining faithful to its own vision of education. The basic principles are to maximize the use of the qualities and skills present within the Rietveld and Sandberg community and offer space for experimentation on all fronts.
Students, alumni, lecturers and staff were invited to form teams and devise a design proposal. Around 20 teams entered the first round. Of these, six were shortlisted and these teams produced a sketch design in the past two months. In the process, the mostly inexperienced design teams were supported by independent architects who were asked to help develop the design teams' ideas. Consultations were also organised with advisers specialising in building technology, construction costs, regulations, sustainability and process management.
These were the six topics that were scrutinised on Thursday, 26 January 2012, by a judging panel made up of the Executive Board and management and assisted by external experts including Malcolm Smith (Zuidas supervisor). The academy community was also asked to indicate its preference. The winning team, which operates under the name Fedlev, consists of lecturer Paulien Bremmer (NL, 1968), lecturer Maze de Boer (NL, 1976), Graphic Design student Luca Carboni (It, 1986) and Architectural Design student Sandra Stanionyte (Lit, 1986).
The winning sketch design and the designs submitted by other entrants can be seen at www.rietveldacademie.nl/nl/Gerrit-Willem-Do-It-Yourself
The Do-It-Yourself principle was applied to all aspects of the process. For example, students and alumni from the graphic design and VAV departments created project newsletters, posters and video documentaries of the process. Available talent was also involved in development and realisation as far as possible.
In the coming months, the winning design will be developed into an Extended Preliminary Design. The plan is then set to be put out to tender as a Design & Build project with the aim of entering into a contractual partnership that ensures that the focus on and space for quality is maintained.

With Surface Research, artist Henri Jacobs presents his visual and practice-based research into the properties of the surface. (Re)using and modifying the picture plane plays a vital part in the creation of an image.
Jacobs deploys two strategies in this process: the palimpsest and iconoclasm. In a continuous process of scratching out and overwriting the surface becomes a fine mesh of traces that can serve as material. Moreover, the material destruction of an image can also lead to the creation of a new one. Surface Research thus demonstrates that destruction can be a form of creation.
The Rietveld Research Residency is a joint initiative of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture that offers artists and designers the opportunity to focus on a research project.

Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Oude Kerk Amsterdam present:
OMG
From Friday 20 January until Sunday 5 February 2012, students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie will be presenting their work in the Old Church (Oude Kerk) in Amsterdam in an exhibition entitled ‘OMG’. In an ice-cold church in one of the city's hottest districts, ‘OMG’ will provide visitors with a unique glimpse into the world of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. While the exhibition is running, the Old Church will continue to provide its usual religious services. In presenting this exhibition, the students of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie are demonstrating that, even in 2012, traditional and new ideas can go hand in hand in a 12th-century Protestant church.
As well as providing the public with an inside view of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, ‘OMG’ is also offering a different perspective on Amsterdam's oldest church. Sculptures, performances, installations, videos and paintings will be presented in the most unexpected, curious and Christian locations. The students will be gaining one of their first experiences of creating an exhibition and everything that this involves.
‘OMG’ will be officially opened by NRC columnist Joyce Roodnat at 17.00 on Friday, 20 January 2012.
On Sunday, 23 January 2012, students will be providing special guided tours to churchgoers. The guided tours will begin immediately after the Sunday service.
The exhibition will run until 5 February 2012.
